Description

Checks if websites have weak SHA-1 SSL certificates. Built at HackMIT as an extension to this open source project: https://github.com/konklone/shaaaaaaaaaaaaa

A recent blog post from Google exposes most of the web (including Google itself) using proven-to-be-spoofable SHA-1 hashes for SSL. The blog post warns that Google will start indicating to its Chrome users when they're on a site with an unreliable SSL cert in 2016 - that's in two years. Web users have the right to information transparency about the sites they're on now.

The extension checks the current site's SSL certificate and lets the user know if the hashing is "good" (like SHA-2), "almost" (if the cert is old but the intermediate certificates are good) or "bad" (like SHA-1).

Future versions will include a simple UI for users to learn more about the app and SSL. This no explanation approach is a bit cryptic.

What has inspired us?

Extore is a team of professionals who are passionate about creating extensions for web browsers. This devotion also gives us opportunity to appreciate work of other people. We get inspired by useful, open source extensions made by developers all over the world. Our strong belief is that one should share helpful add-ons with others. That’s why we’d like to present you our ever-growing list of favourite extensions that have inspired us. Moreover, as you probably have already learned, sometimes struggling for the best brings an end to the good. Talking about add-ons it often turns out that an upgrade is worse then previous version. Also it can become really tricky to get back to the beloved version of your favourite extension. That’s why we’re going to make not only the latest, but all versions of our favourite (and we hope yours too) add-ons available for download. No more compromises, just stick to the version you really like!
