The main characters of the game are the plumber Mario and his brother Luigi (as a game character for the second player). The goal of the game is to go through the Mushroom Kingdom, slipping or destroying the soldiers of the tortoise King of the Kupa to save the Princess captured by him.
Mario attacks opponents, jumping on top of them or hitting the bottom of the platform.
On the way, Mario collects coins and bonuses, hitting the blocks with a question mark, and also searches for secret coin stores in brick walls. Among the bonuses you can find an orange mushroom, taking that, the character grows in size, turning into Super Mario. If Super Mario or Fiery Mario touches the enemy, then they return to normal Mario. If the opponent touches Mario or the time allocated for passing the level ends, then the player loses one "life" and the game begins anew.
Another bonus in the game is a star. Having received this, Mario becomes invulnerable to enemies for some time: opponents die from one of his touch. At some levels, there are also bonuses in the form of a green mushrooms, which adds Mario one "life".
