The Doric dialect is ideal for three things – farming, fishing and humour. It’s this third aspect of the dialect I want to harness here. There are other websites that list Doric words and their meanings but very few use Doric words in modern context, and that’s what we are aiming to achieve – a modern day snapshot of Doric’s use across the North east of Scotland.
The Doric is thriving. Schools are encouraging pupils to learn Doric words and phrases, People who have moved to the North East are interested in the local language and keen to get involved. Internet forums are full of people spikin’ Doric online.
As well as providing a humorous resource of modern day Doric I would love to see new Doric words being added to the vocabulary. New words being added to a language or dialect prove that it is truly developing. Your Grunny might complain that naebody spiks proper Doric ony mare, however, without a doubt, the Doric her own Grunny would have spoken would have been very different again.
