Since childhood, Aoba Suzukaze has loved the Fairies Story game series, particularly the character designs. So when she graduates from high school, it is no surprise that she applies to work at Eagle Jump, the company responsible for making her favorite video game. On her first day, she is excited to learn that she will be working on a new installment to the series: Fairies Story 3—and even more so under Kou Yagami, the lead character designer.

Summer usually brings a dearth of video game releases – do publishers think people actually want to go outside or something? – but that's not the case this month. August brings with it a host of big name releases, from team-based hero shooter LawBreakers and Saints Row spinoff Agents of Mayhem, to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy delivering possibly the last-ever instalment of action archaeology.

Here, then, are our 17 favourite announcements, culled from all the pre-E3 shows. We’ve stuck to games that were either revealed for the first time on stage, or were finally confirmed after months of gossip, leaks and rumours. These are the titles we want to discover more about at the show, and over the months to come.
