Pittsburgh Steelers, American professional field football crew situated in Pittsburgh that plays in the National Football League (NFL). The Steelers have won six Super Bowl titles and eight American Football Conference (AFC) titles. One of the NFL's best and storied establishments, the Steelers have more Super Bowl triumphs than some other group.
Initially called the Pittsburgh Pirates, the group was established in 1933 by Pittsburgh inhabitant Art Rooney, who supposedly utilized rewards from a bet on a steed race to set up the establishment. (Responsibility for group stays inside the Rooney family right up 'til today.) The group was not an early achievement; it qualified for the playoffs only once in its initial 37 years. In 1940 the group changed its moniker to "Steelers" in tribute to Pittsburgh's principle industry. The Steelers tied for the NFL Eastern Division title in 1947, yet they were closed out 21–0 by the Philadelphia Eagles in a playoff match to meet all requirements for the NFL title game. Rooney viewed the Steelers battle through the 1950s and '60s until their fortunes turned around with the landing of head mentor Chuck Noll in 1969.
From 1969 to 1972 Noll exhibited his astonishing aptitude at perceiving ability as he drafted five future Hall of Famers: protective handle "Signify" Joe Greene, quarterback Terry Bradshaw, cautious back Mel Blount, linebacker Jack Ham, and running back Franco Harris (associated with his "Impeccable Reception," a game-winning catch in the playoffs against the Oakland Raiders in 1972, a standout amongst the most noteworthy and questionable plays in professional football history). In 1974 Noll chose four additional players who might in the long run be enlisted into the Hall of Fame: focus Mike Webster, collectors Lynn Swann and John Stallworth, and linebacker Jack Lambert. These players proceeded to shape an administration of unmatched achievement, winning four Super Bowls (1975, 1976, 1979, and 1980) in six seasons behind a predominant protection known as the "Steel Curtain" and an effective offense driven by Bradshaw. The Pittsburgh Steelers groups of the 1970s were additionally portrayed by an intense fan base, remarkable for the splendid yellow "Awful Towels"— which were made by the group's well known and peculiar radio telecaster for a long time, Myron Cope—that fans would wave during home amusements. Pittsburgh Steelers blurred somewhat during the 1980s, with four postseason billets in the decade, and Noll resigned in 1991.
Noll was supplanted by Bill Cowher, who drove the Steelers to the playoffs in 10 of his 15 seasons with the group. A standout amongst Cowher's most critical staff moves was his advancement of auxiliary mentor Dick LeBeau to the situation of protective facilitator in 1995: in his two stretches (1995–97, 2004–15) as the Steelers' organizer, LeBeau set up together impressive resistances that characterized the Pittsburgh groups of those times. The Steelers' barrier of the mid-1990s was featured by stars, for example, future Hall of Fame cornerback Rod Woodson and linebackers Greg Lloyd and Kevin Greene. Pittsburgh progressed to the Super Bowl in 1996 however lost to the Dallas Cowboys.
