In Spelunky, you start off with four bombs and four ropes at the start of each run, but that won't get you far. To give yourself the best possible chance of surviving, it's essential to collect helpful items along the way, and so shops are a great place to stop by.
When you begin a level, don't feel like you have to make a beeline for the exit right away. Take your time to explore as much as you can. Break every vase - but beware of possible enemies lurking inside - and open every treasure chest for jewels. More money means more to spend on shopping.
You're more likely to go further armed with a shotgun than your feeble whip.
