What is the meaning of PNR?

PNR stands for Passenger Name Record and it is a 10-digit number located on the top left-hand corner of the ticket. The 10-digit number is split into 3 digits and 7 digits. The last seven digits are randomly generated by the computer and do not signify anything. The first three digits signify the originating PRS [Passenger Reservation System] from where the ticket have been issued. Refer the information below to know more.

◘ 4 and 5 refer to SR, SWR, and SCR region

◘ 6 and 7 refer to NFR, ECR, ER, ECoR, SER, and SECR region

◘ 8 and 9 refer to CR, WCR, and WR region

It is always advisable to either store a copy of your original ticket or, at least maintain a copy of the PNR. This helps in a situation where you have lost your tickets and need a duplicate ticket to be issued.

Railway Acronyms and Abbreviations

While you are on the Railway website on during the entire process of railway ticketing- whether online or in person- you might come across various acronyms and you might be left wondering their meaning. WL - Waiting List. This means that your seat on the train is not confirmed and your reservation has been put in a queue. In the event of a cancellation ahead of you, the railways will confirm your ticket.

GNWL - General Wait List. If your ticket has GNWL mentioned then you are not allowed to board any of the reserved compartments until your ticket is confirmed. If you still want to travel with a GNWL ticket, then you have to board the general compartment, which is also known as unreserved compartment.

RLWL - Remote Location Wait List. If you have a waitlist ticket, then this will be the most common abbreviation that you will see on your ticket. This is mentioned on tickets if you are traveling between two major stations. A ticket with RLWL has the maximum chance of getting a reservation status.

CNF - Confirmed (Coach or Berth will be available for Confirmed tickets). As mentioned, this is a confirmed ticket; just pack your bags, board the train, and occupy your berth.

CAN/MOD - Canceled or Modified Passenger. You will see this on the ticket after you cancel it. You should not board a train with CAN/MOD written on it else, you may face the action and be liable to pay penalty.

RAC - Reservation Against Cancellation. This is midway between getting a waitlisted ticket and getting a confirmed ticket. RAC passengers are provided with a sitting berth only, which means a single seat will have two passengers. RAC passengers get a priority over others for a reservation.

PQWL - Pooled Quota Waiting list; this is written on tickets if you have booked your tickets under a quota system. Indian railways has issued many quotas

RELEASED - Alternative accommodation provided without canceling the ticket

REGRET/WL - No more Booking permitted. When you check the availability status on the IRCTC/Railway website and this message is displayed, then you cannot book any further tickets. In other words, the reservation counter personnel will return your application form without booking a ticket.

Procedure for booking a Railway ticket online

◘ Visit Indian railways site, IRCTC website.

◘ Enter your login credentials and click on the Login button.

◘ Type in the name of the station that will be convenient for you to start your journey.

◘ Type in the name of the place/station that you are planning to visit.

◘ Select the date from the calendar (dates of departure that you are planning).

◘ Choose the ticket type - i-ticket, e-ticket. If you select the option “i-ticket,” the hard copy of the ticket is couriered to you. In “e-ticket,” you can either download the ticket on your phone or show the PNR number to the TTE for verification.

◘ Choose the quota type - General, Tatkal, Ladies, or other option as provided. You can choose as per your requirements.

◘ Click Find Trains. The website will display a list of trains that you can choose from.

◘ Select the train and choose the berth type [SL, 3A, 2A, 1A, 2S, Chair Car [CC], FA.]

◘ The web page will then show you the availability status of the selected train.

◘ Click on the option to book the ticket.

◘ The web page then displays the reservation form.

◘ Enter the passenger details i.e. Name [15 characters are allowed], Age, Sex [male/female], Type of Berth [lower, middle, side lower, side upper, or upper.]

◘ Key in the passenger mobile number.

◘ Enter the verification code that would have been sent to your entered mobile.

◘ Continue by clicking on Go.

◘ The web page then provides you different payment options - credit card, net banking, debit card, or mobile payment. You can choose the one that is most convenient to you.

◘ The reservation system prepares to display the ticket. You should wait for some time to see the ticket. Do not refresh the page or navigate to the previous page. If you do so, there are chances the amount will be deducted from your account without booking a ticket.

◘ You will receive a text message [SMS] from IRCTC giving you details about your journey details. You can show the SMS to the railway Ticket Collector [TC] with a valid document [PAN Card, Ration Card, Aadhar Card, Voter Card].

◘ You also have the option of booking the ticket through a third party (agency/travel) website that has a tie-up with the Indian Railways, for example, Goibibo, Clear Trip, etc.
