Don't let people know you're in front of your computer. Whenever you like, you can activate (red mark) the option to 'ignore' (and yet read) the messages from any user.
Keep in mind that this extension marks the message as "Non-read", and the next time you open your facebook account, the message will still appear as "Non-read" even when you've seen it before.
