On installation your logged in gmail atom feed is checked for new mail in 1 minutes time, and after that every 30 minutes. Clicking the button or accessing it with hotkey resets the scheduled check to 5 minutes later and after that 30 minutes from then on.
Alt+M can be changed in Chrome's extension menu under 'Keyboard shortcuts' at the bottom of that page.
The quick inbox that pops up is actually Gmail's official mobile version. Hotkeys work within that version and an overlay can be accessed by pressing the '?' button when the mobile inbox is opened. Using your mouse is completely fine too (and less of a headache in most cases).
