Welcome to SocialSec!
Social media has become a widely popular form of communication and sharing for billions of people around the world. But sometimes, we have a tendency to “over share” and provide anyone with information that used to be at least semi-private. Birthdates, anniversaries, names of our children and significant others. There also tends to be habit of using this information when creating passwords since that information is easy to remember being near and dear to our hearts.
Unfortunately, this is a problem. “Hackers” can formulate this knowledge into a Social Engineering attack.
SocialSec is a Chrome extension designed to help keep you and your accounts safe from these attacks by comparing the public information posted to your social media accounts to passwords your are using or creating.
How do we do this?
SocialSec creates a custom word list based on public profile information. This word list also contains commonly found substitutions, i.e. @ for A, 3 for E and so on
Currently, SocialSec can only pull information from these social media sites:
Facebook
Once you’ve signed into your social media, you’re all set!
SocialSec protects you in the background and will notify you when it detects a match between your word list and a password you are currently using or a password you are attempting to create. SocialSec will then run you through the actions you can take concerning this password.
What information do you use?
At this time, we can only pull the most public information from Facebook, but we hope to change this in the near future to include any and all public information you would like to have in your word list.
SocialSec was designed as an Arizona State University Capstone project. Your constructive feedback will help us refine SocialSec for future releases.
Thank you for using SocialSec!
Extore is a team of professionals who are passionate about creating extensions for web browsers. This devotion also gives us opportunity to appreciate work of other people. We get inspired by useful, open source extensions made by developers all over the world. Our strong belief is that one should share helpful add-ons with others. That’s why we’d like to present you our ever-growing list of favourite extensions that have inspired us. Moreover, as you probably have already learned, sometimes struggling for the best brings an end to the good. Talking about add-ons it often turns out that an upgrade is worse then previous version. Also it can become really tricky to get back to the beloved version of your favourite extension. That’s why we’re going to make not only the latest, but all versions of our favourite (and we hope yours too) add-ons available for download. No more compromises, just stick to the version you really like!
