Captain is here! And this time he won’t fly away. He’ll stay by your side at Chrome!
What does Captain do?
This extension provides a way to perform a reverse image search from HTML 5 videos by extracting frames from them. Alternatively, the user can save that frame and search for it manually. The extension also allows the search of static images.
The user will be able to choose where to carry out the search from five reverse image search engines: Google, TinEye, iqdb, iqdb3D and SauceNAO.
Why should I install Captain?
The main goal of this extension is to make easier to users to do a reverse image search from video the same way it can be done with still images. In the worst case scenario, if the video isn’t supported by the extension, it takes out the frame and allows the user to save it locally and perform the search manually.
Regarding still images, the plus in this extension is that sometimes the reverse image engines won’t succeed finding some images by their URLs because they’re private or require credentials to access them. This extension will perform a search by image data (creating a temporary file and uploading it to the server), so it won’t matter where the image is, the search engine will always process the image.
Are there any issues or limitations?
This is a pretty new extension, so issues are about to be found yet. But some clarifications must be done:
-This extension ONLY supports HTML 5 video. This means flash, java or any other plugins or tweaks used for inserting non-standard HTML 5 video files won’t work with this extension at all. Also, there are no plans for supporting these kinds of videos.
-The support of long streaming videos is limited for now. It may be some issues regarding the load or the rendering when extracting a frame to search.
-For some videos, the context menu is disabled by default, so you must check the “Alternative context menu for video” option if you want to show an alternative context menu.
