The show was based on the 2007 New York Times Best Sales Award and Jay Asher's novel of the same name. The story tells of a young boy Clay (Dylan Minnette) received a shoe box one night, with a suicide, deceased woman inside. A tape from classmate Hannah (Katherine Langford). There are instructions in the tape, which are to be handed over from one student to another to explain to 12 students why they have been in her death for 13 reasons and why she committed suicide.
