Для того, чтобы формула отрисовалась в текущей строке, используйте двойной доллар

Для того, чтобы формула отрисовалась в новом абзаце — оберните в слеш и квадратную скобку.
→ \[ \lambda \text{ I'll call it } \lambda \]
