Steal the Word is a browser extension for word note-taking, word highlighting, and reading assistance. You can save any word and its contextual information, and add annotations, notes, tags, and more. Wherever you go on the web, it will automatically highlight the saved words, and with just a click, you can quickly review the information you've saved.
Features:
Supports most web page text.
No language limitations, as long as the word matches exactly. However, the program cannot automatically recognize variations of the word, or convert between uppercase and lowercase. You can customize the matching rules or manually enter the variations.
Supports saving words with multiple meanings or multiple sentences.
In the word bank, you can browse by contextual information.
Uses free APIs to automatically query Chinese, Taiwanese, Cantonese, English, and Japanese pronunciations. You can manually disable this function on the settings page.
Problems that Steal the Word aims to solve:
(1) Increase familiarity with unfamiliar words on web pages.
(2) Link saved words to your own notes, eliminating the need to repeatedly consult a dictionary to find the appropriate definition.
(3) Increase opportunities for word note-taking, without spending time organizing them but never reviewing them.
(4) Efficiently organize word usage.
(5) Help you recall previously viewed web pages.
⚠️Note:
On some websites (such as Google Docs and online code editors), editing text may be affected. Please manually set the website to default off to avoid unexpected results.
Under normal circumstances, the extension's response time is within 0-200 milliseconds (ms), which is not noticeable. However, on web pages with an unusually high amount of text (such as some W3C documents), or on devices with lower CPU performance, using this extension may significantly affect web page performance, causing a lag in operation. In these cases, you may consider using the extension only on specific web pages.
If you have a solution to the above problems or other suggestions, you can submit them on GitHub or the support page.
Extore is a team of professionals who are passionate about creating extensions for web browsers. This devotion also gives us opportunity to appreciate work of other people. We get inspired by useful, open source extensions made by developers all over the world. Our strong belief is that one should share helpful add-ons with others. That’s why we’d like to present you our ever-growing list of favourite extensions that have inspired us. Moreover, as you probably have already learned, sometimes struggling for the best brings an end to the good. Talking about add-ons it often turns out that an upgrade is worse then previous version. Also it can become really tricky to get back to the beloved version of your favourite extension. That’s why we’re going to make not only the latest, but all versions of our favourite (and we hope yours too) add-ons available for download. No more compromises, just stick to the version you really like!
