The Mariners won 116 games in 2001, which set the American League record for most wins in a single season and tied the 1906 Chicago Cubs for the Major League record for most wins in a single season.

The Mariners started the season with a 13–2 record, their best start in franchise history. However, they went 55–92 after their great start, finishing last in the AL West and falling out of the playoffs once again.

With the Washington Nationals making the World Series during the 2019 postseason, the Mariners now hold the dubious distinction of being the only MLB franchise to have never played in the World Series.
