.:: What does it do?

The RegretsReporter extension gives you a way to report YouTube Regrets—videos that YouTube has recommended to you that you end up wishing you had never watched. This extension is part of a crowdsourced data campaign to learn more about what people regret watching, and how it was recommended to them. RegretsReporter is only for people who are 18 or older. By contributing your data to our research you can help us improve one of the most powerful recommendation engines on the planet.

.:: How does it work?

From a YouTube video page you can click the RegretsReporter icon in your browser bar to generate a report form. The report form will ask you to tell us more about your YouTube Regret and collect information about how you arrived at that video. This is important for understanding how YouTube's recommender system keeps people watching and what effects it might have on them. As you browse YouTube, the extension will also send data about how much time you spend on the platform, without collecting any information about what you are watching or searching. This may give us some insight into how often users are experiencing YouTube Regrets.

.:: Will this share everything I do on YouTube with Mozilla?

No. Mozilla will only receive information about videos that you watch or search for if you choose to submit a YouTube Regret. No information about what you watch or search for will be automatically sent to us by installing this extension.

.:: What kind of data am I donating when I use RegretsReporter?

If you choose to submit a YouTube Regret by clicking the extension icon in your browser bar, the report form will include some information about your YouTube browsing behavior up to 5 hours prior to initiating the report. This includes what kind of YouTube pages you have visited and how you reached them. You have the opportunity to edit this before you send it to us and remove anything that you do not want us to see.
Periodic, aggregated information about your YouTube usage will be sent to Mozilla by default if you install this extension. This includes information like how often you visit YouTube and how much time you spend on the site, but NOT what you watch or search for on the platform. We do not receive any information about what you are watching on YouTube unless you send it to us by submitting a Regret report.

.:: Is my privacy protected?

Throughout this process, your privacy is paramount. The data Mozilla collects is linked to a randomly-generated user ID, not your YouTube account. Only Mozilla will have access to the raw data, and when we share results from the extension we will disclose it in a way that minimizes the risk of users being identified. The extension gathers no data when you browse in a private browsing window. .:: What will you do with the information from RegretsReporter?

Insights from the RegretsReporter extension will be used in Mozilla Foundation's advocacy and campaigning work to hold YouTube and other companies accountable for the AI developed to power their recommendation systems. These insights will be shared with journalists working to investigate these problems and technologists working to build more trustworthy AI.

.:: Can I report YouTube videos embedded on other sites?

No. Since this project aims to study recommended videos, this extension will only allow you to report videos that you watched on the YouTube platform.

.:: Does this work on mobile?

No. Currently this extension is compatible with Firefox and Chrome on desktop only.

.:: Is RegretsReporter available in multiple languages?

Currently RegretsReporter is only available in English, and the analysis will be focused on English language content.
