Description

Beta version

<This is a submission for NASA space apps challenge 2017 Hackathon. There is limited functionality and no support for this at the moment>

Imagine reading a short 500-word scientific journal containing 20 technical jargon unknown to you. You know that there is a treasury of knowledge in that article, but the idea of searching up each of these 20 words one-by-one in Google (or any other dictionary) is discouraging you.

What would you do? Would you just give up on new knowledge?

"Seek Dictionary" makes searching up the meaning of new words effortless. "Seek dictionary" currently exists as a chrome extension which you can already download

(search up "Seek Dictionary" in the Chrome Webstore).

When enabled, "Seek Dictionary" automatically detects specific scientific terms within a website. A single click of these words would immediately bring up a short definition of the word from a trusted source + a relevant illustration to help you understand the said term. As for the 20 technical jargons we mentioned earlier, you can know learn those words up with Alt+Tab-ing to search them up individually.

Our team believes that by improving the user experience of looking up a dictionary, the entry barrier to scientific knowledge will be much lower, leading to a much more enjoyable learning experience.

Currently, our team has only been able to include geological terms in our dictionary (within the 30+ hours we had during the Hackathon). However, as time permits, we will look to gradually include other branches of sciences and other fields of knowledge. We'd greatly appreciate it if you could download our Dictionary (1.5MB only) and let us know what you think of it by emailing us at Seek.Dictionary[at]gmail.com

What has inspired us?

Extore is a team of professionals who are passionate about creating extensions for web browsers. This devotion also gives us opportunity to appreciate work of other people. We get inspired by useful, open source extensions made by developers all over the world. Our strong belief is that one should share helpful add-ons with others. That’s why we’d like to present you our ever-growing list of favourite extensions that have inspired us. Moreover, as you probably have already learned, sometimes struggling for the best brings an end to the good. Talking about add-ons it often turns out that an upgrade is worse then previous version. Also it can become really tricky to get back to the beloved version of your favourite extension. That’s why we’re going to make not only the latest, but all versions of our favourite (and we hope yours too) add-ons available for download. No more compromises, just stick to the version you really like!
