History of Indian railways
The story of journey of Indian railways goes back to the years of British reign. The East India company, in early 1830s, had put forward the plan for railways for the very first time. In 1836, the very first experimental railway line of India was laid, in Madras. It was in 1845 that the GIPR or the Great Indian Peninsular railway was established. GIPR, in early 1850s, started the first passenger railway of the nation, which was in operation between Thane and Bombay. Around the same period, the Great Southern India Railway company got its beginning. Around 1860, track-construction in Madras started, opening an eighty mile line between Negapatam and Trichinopoly

The supervision of Robert Maitland Brereton post 1857 gave a quick boost to the expansion of Indian railways. He is credited for the linkage of Allahabad-Jabalpur routes with the GIPR. This route link had given way to direct Bombay-Calcutta travel. The route was made officially operating in March of 1870.

The ownership of the Great Indian Peninsular railway was acquired by government around 1900. The railway network further expanded post the acquisition. By the end of first decade of 20th century, most of the railway companies were acquired by the then Indian government. Around the same period was the electric-locomotives introduced. While world war and then the great recession had a strong hit on the railways, the decade post 1920 was favourable for Indian railways with the economic boom. Again then, the World war II was another blow on Indian Railways. A considerable proportion of coaches, locomotives etc. were moved out of the country for war purposes. Indian railways, in its whole, became a government owned entity by 1946.
