Ein Papierschredder dient dazu private Dokumente wie Steuerunterlagen, Gehaltsabrechnungen, Kontoauszüge oder Mahnbescheide sicher zu vernichten. Dabei wird durch ein spezielles Schneidwerk das Papier zu Streifen oder kleine Partikel zerschnitten. Größe und Form der Späne sind hängen von der gewählten Sicherheitsstufe (siehe unten) ab. Je feiner die Partikel desto höher ist die Sicherheitsstufe. Schredder haben im Gegensatz zu einem Aktenvernichter, der auf einen Papierkorb aufgesetzt wird, einen eigenen Fangkorb. Betrieben wird ein solches Gerät durch einen Elektromotor, der Fangkorb ist in den meisten Fällen aus Kunststoff.
